Did you know that Pilates celebrates its 100th birthday this year? In 1926, Joseph Hubertus Pilates – born in Mönchengladbach, Germany – emigrated to New York and opened the world’s very first Pilates studio on 8th Avenue in Manhattan. What began as “Contrology” is now one of the most popular training methods in the world. For us, this anniversary closes a personal circle: Monica Gomis, founder of Momax Pilates, first encountered Reformer Pilates in New York many years ago while touring the world as a dancer. That experience still shapes how we share Pilates with passion every single day at our studio in Munich.
How It All Began: Joseph Pilates and His First Studio in New York
Joseph Pilates developed his method from personal experience: a sickly child, he trained himself to impressive fitness through gymnastics, boxing, and yoga. His New York studio soon attracted Broadway dancers, boxers, and stars like Katharine Hepburn and George Gershwin. His principle: strength, flexibility, and body control through precise, mindful movement – exactly what we know as Pilates today.
What makes us especially proud: the roots of Pilates lie in Germany – and the close connection to the dance world, where our founder comes from, has existed since the very beginning. One hundred years later, we bring this tradition into the present at Momax Pilates in Munich with modern Reformer equipment, Matwork, and up-to-date training methods.
What Makes Pilates So Special – Even After 100 Years?
Pilates is not a trend that comes and goes. The method has stood the test of an entire century because it works:
Pilates strengthens the deep muscles and the powerhouse (core), improves posture and flexibility, is gentle on the joints, and suits every age and fitness level – from a soft introduction to a challenging HIIT Reformer workout. That’s exactly why beginners, expecting and new mothers (Postnatal Reformer), advanced students, and professionals all train with us.
